    mondoBIOTECH holding AG (SIX: RARE) announces today to have been transferred from the US FDA the Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis to its medicinal product candidate, DasKloster 1001.


    “Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive illness of the lung, with a median survival time of only a few years after the onset of symptoms. In IPF, healthy tissue is progressively replaced by components of the connective and supporting tissue, leading to extensive scar formation until complete loss of organ function may occur. Currently, besides lung transplantation, there is no regulatory approved drug therapy in the USA,” said Company’s CSO Dr. Dorian Bevec.


    “Orphan Drug Designation is granted for products that are intended to treat life-threatening or chronically debilitating conditions affecting no more than 200,000 patients in the USA, and provides significant commercial benefits to the company when the product reaches market authorization,” commented Ruggero Gramatica, CEO of mondoBIOTECH.
